If you are lost, look for the highest point in that area ... that is where we will be. You can park at the top of the hill, just come up the driveway.

                    Picture
                    This is a basic skills reinforcement program for children in first and second grade. It’s basic math and reading with the kids who are falling a little bit behind on their level. It’s actually a 6 week program. The first session is Saturday May 7th, through their graduation at June 18. Don’t worry if you can’t commit to all six weeks, just sign up for as many days as you’re available. You can even sign up to be a substitute. It’s just really great to be one on one with the kids, which they don’t get in the classroom.

                    For more information, contact Zully Chan (CAYPpresident@gmail.com).  Sign up here: http://bit.ly/hib661

                    Thank you to JP, Emi, and Nina for helping the kids.   You really made a difference for these kids.

                    Service - Career Day 122 Street Elementary School - June 10, 2011

                    Picture

                    Dear California Young Professionals of Kiwanis members,

                    I am writing to you today in order to seek your assistance at Career Day 2011 on June 10 at One Hundred Twenty Second Street Elementary School in Los Angeles.

                    One Hundred Twenty Second Street can be considered a diamond in the rough.  We have consistently out performed other schools in the area in all state testing, making the most gains of any school in the district.  Not only have we been award the Title I Academic Achievement Award, but we are also a California Distinguished School.  All our achievements and awards lay directly in the effort of our teachers and in our expectations of our students.

                    Career Day not only introduces students to potential careers for their future, but also inspires them to develop and create a goal for themselves. Many students in the area come from homes and backgrounds that do not necessarily prepare them for a college education.  In fact, many students do not even graduate from high school, much less attend college.  This is an opportunity for you to help make a difference in the life of a child.

                    As I am sure you are well aware, the Los Angeles Unified School District has undergone major budget cuts, having to send pink slips to thousands of teachers.  Because of this, it is even more important for students to see that despite what is happening with the government and the economy, there are still people that support them and hope for their success in life.  This message has a much greater impact when it comes from people outside of school.  It shows students that there are people in the world that care and that they are not alone.

                    We would greatly appreciate it if you or a colleague from your company could spend just a few hours at our school on the morning of June 10 to speak with our students.  The event will be held from 8:00am to approximately 1:00pm.  This will include a light breakfast, lunch, and a performance for you by our students.

                    Please contact our Career Day Chair Michelle Kirchner at
                    misskucsb@yahoo.com or 909-641-7562 if you are able willing to spend one morning inspiring and changing the lives of young children.

                    Service - Paint Your Heart Out - April 2 and 16, 2011 - Kiwanis One Day

                    Picture
                    We finished preparing the house on April 2nd and now it's time to paint it!   Join us on April 16 as we re-paint an eldery lady's home.   The mobile home is located in Placentia and this done through the Paint Your Heart Out Foundation.

                    This is our largest service project of the year and we hope too all of our members there.  More information will be posted soon, but if you need details, contact Nancy Xu (CAYPservice@gmail.com).   To sign up, click here: http://bit.ly/gecqT5

                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Wow!!!  Thank you to our many members, Kiwins, and Circle K friends that joined us in painting the home.   Check out the photos below. But first, see what others said about the service event.

                    Here is what V.K. thought of Paint Day:
                    It was the third year in a row that we’ve done it. It was a mobile home in Placentia – there were about 20-25 people there, and we painted the house.  It went really well, we finished by 1pm, and the owner of the house was really happy.  I personally think it made everything look a little nicer to give the home a fresh coat of paint.  We’ll most likely continue this next year as it seems to be a big hit with the members.

                    Here is what Brent Powers and Nanxy Xu thought of the prep day:
                    Brent: It had a good turnout.  Once we all finally found the house, we went around and cleared the rocks out, washed the sides of the house, trimmed the plants and more.  We ended up completing the project in only an hour and a half.  So it was a quick good project.  It was my first time meeting some members like VK, Rupa, Norma, and others.

                    Nancy: We had 7 people there from CAYP.  JP Antonio, VK, his wife, Brent, Norma, Grace, and myself.  We’re looking forward to the actual paint day, where we’ll have more work to do.  This time we only took until 10:30, when we were originally scheduled to be there until 2!

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------
                    Update From Patrick: I’m the only active central California member for CAYP, but I brought out 2 of my coworkers.  We were out there with maybe 60-70 Key Clubbers, two action clubs and about 3 Kiwanis clubs.  We were out on the San Joaquin River working with a conservation group whose goal was to restore the land to its original shape.  It involved environmental education, and providing walking trails by tearing down posts, wire fences, clearing up the river and setting up beaver traps around trees to help protect them.  We worked from about 8-4pm.  This happens yearly and it’s great seeing all of the K Family out participating.  My coworkers have been out to one other event, so I’ve been trying to get them to join CAYP.

                    Enjoy the photos below!

                    Service - Northern Cal - Kiwanis One Day - April 2, 2011

                    Who: Since it's Kiwanis One Day, mostly Key Clubbers and Kiwanians - and hopefully we have some CAYP members representing!

                    What: In short, trail / creek beautification! We will be doing creek clean up, trail maintenance, weed abatement, litter pick up, and turning of bark under play ground equipment.  There are a number of hiking trails that have become overgrown with vegetation and need to be trimmed back, and trails widened. As of now, there are 175 people signed up (mostly Key Clubbers) but there is enough work for up to 300 volunteers - so our participation would definitely be helpful! ;)

                    Where: Alum Rock Park - registration will be at the Visitor's Center Ranger Office.  Enter the park from the main entrance (the one at Penetencia Creek Road; the Alum Rock Road entrance is only for pedestrians). The Visitor's Center is about 1.5 miles down the windy, turning road.

                    When:
                    * 8:00am: registration
                    * 8:30am: project starts!
                    * 11:30am: cleanup
                    * 12:00pm: bbq lunch (provided!)
                    * 1:00pm: volleyball
                    What to wear:
                    * work gloves
                    * closed-toe shoes
                    * long pants
                    * long-sleeved shirt
                    * hat
                    * sunscreen

                    Please bring your own water containers, as the city will not allow the providing of individual water bottles due to environmental reasons.

                    Please let me know if you would like to attend, so you can be included in the head count for food after the event! Also, if you have any ideas of projects that you would like to do, feel free to send me an email! I would be happy to set something up for all of us to do :)

                    A special thanks to Camille Goulet and Armando Velazquez for District Administrator and Assistant Administrator for their work in Circle K.

                    From Camille Goulet:  It was a great DCON – it was terrific to have so many students so enthusiastic about their service.  It really embraced issues of integrity and service hours, and keeping candidates accountable and having real questions to them about their leadership.  I have to say the student convention committee did an awesome job, so much so, that by the end of the weekend they were so exhausted!  But it went really well.  But it points out that the growth of the organization, which is at about 2,000 people compared to 3 years ago with a membership of 1,200, we have some growing pain issues, which are good ones to have.

                    Service - Children's Institute (CII) Holiday Party - December 10, 2010

                    This big bash is an annual event held for the children and families that Children's Institute serves.  The Children's Institute is dedicated to children who have been affected by violence in their homes or communities. Since 1906, CII has been serving at-risk children and families throughout Los Angeles County.  The agency provides healing and support so traumatized children can recover and lead healthy lives.  This is a great opportunity to give back to a community of children who have gone through so much already in their young lives.

                    Traditionally CAYP Kiwanis has assisted with the Toy Giveaway, where each volunteer is paired up with a child who gets to select their choice gift!  Other activities available include games, arts & crafts, petting zoo, and distributing food.
                    -------------------------------------
                    Thanks for JP, Helen, Mondo, Grace, Zully, Antonio, and Lily for attending.

                    In addition to providing a Thanksgiving Day feast to the homeless and less fortunate, The We Give Thanks Thanksgiving Dinner has become a meeting point where anyone not wanting to spend this festive time of year alone can come and enjoy a great meal, entertainment, and the friendly company of thousands of others from Southern California.

                    "Tuesday & Wednesday are food preparation days.  CAYP Kiwanis will be assisting with registering volunteers that come out in droves to prepare for the big feast.
                    Thursday -- CAYP Kiwanis in the past has also also assist with registering volunteers that come out to pass food out at the Honda Center.  More information TBA!"
